Journalistic technique and neutrality in the age of Trump

On April 26, 2026, President Donald Trump was interviewed by Norah O’Donnell of 60 Minutes about the gunman who was intercepted trying to infiltrate the White House Correspondents’ dinner. The full interview is here. At 19:47 there is an exchange that has been replayed many times since, in which O’Donnell quotes the gunman’s “manifesto,” and specifically the portion where he wrote, “I am no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist, and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes.” “What’s your reaction to that?” O’Donnell asked.
